Much Ado About Nothing

John + Dad + B-17 = Love

The family got together and bought John’s Dad a ride on the EAA B-17, “Aluminum Overcast”, for his 70th birthday this year.  It took some convincing, but John finally decided that he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to ride along with him.  The flight was scheduled for yesterday, out of the airport in Leesburg, VA.  Before we headed down there, John was pretty sure that the flight wasn’t going to happen with all of the rain and clouds thanks to Hurricane Danny, which is heading up the coast.  But there’s only one way to find out, and that’s to show up and check in for the flight.

We got there around 9:30 so John and Dad could check in.  As predicted, they hadn’t done any flights yet and weren’t sure if they would be able to fly at all.  Leesburg had a ceiling of 400 feet, and the B-17 needed at least 1500.  The weather over Dulles was great, but just 15 miles away in Leesburg we were boxed in.  Unfortunately, John wasn’t going to be able to fly today so it was yesterday or bust.  We hung around at the airport for a while — John and Dad checked out the various aircraft displays (it was Airport Appreciation Day) while I hung out in the FBO reading a book and trying to keep my throat wet (I had a sore throat and congestion yesterday that’s blossomed into a full respiratory infection today).  Around 11am the B-17 folks started asking everyone on Flight 1 or Flight 2 to head over to the check in area… they were flying!

John and Dad got their flight in and loved it.  They brought back lots of pictures.
